Many of our customers ask what the difference in karats means for gold and why it comes in different colors on gold chains for women and men. When gold jewelry is made it all starts out with the purest of gold in 24k. That would be way too soft to make jewelry as well as a much higher price. The answer is to mix it with other metals to bring it down to a metal that can be molded and hold its shape. Most jewelry is made into 14k, but a vast amount is done in 10k as well. For example 14k gold has a lighter yellow color than 18k and is mixed with more metals such as nickel and copper. White gold has more nickel type metals added to the gold to enhance that color as well.
Gold Box Chain
Sometimes you will see a stamp in the jewelry that says 585 instead of 14k. This is because it means the metal is 58.5% gold and the balance is meixed metals to make up the difference. If you have ever seen a rose gold chain it’s because the gold is mixed with a little more copper to give it the beauty of the pink. Many of the designer jewelry items and wedding bands are made in 18k and Platinum as well. Gold color and karat are all personal preference for the person wearing it, because people just have to be happy wearing the gold chains they choose.
We started thinking about why watches are so popular and where the first concept of wearing a wrist watch ever came. The idea of a timepiece of course started with clocks a very long time ago. Then we wanted to go even further and figure out who the first person was to wear one. It turns out the first watch was created by Patek Philippe in 1868 for Countess Koscowicz from Hungary. Then in 1880 Girard Perregaux made 2000 watches for German Naval Officers, but mostly women wore them until the first World War. In 1904 Louis Cartier started making watches and the first ones didn’t go on sale until 1911.
Even though these started to gain popularity, pocket watches remained among the favorites. A pocket watch can be very elegant, but seems like it takes up so much space compared to regular watches. During the war soldiers had to keep hands free so they started to wear wrist watches as well. In 1923 the self winding system was invented, although was too bulky to wear comfortably. In 1950 the first electric watches started being produced and it wasn’t until 1969 that quartz watches came out. Since then men’s and women’s watches have become very popular and even become a fashion statement.
We came up with a really cool topic this week other than gold jewelry, silver chains or diamond cut earrings. It seemed like a fun topic to talk about overall why women like fashion in general so much. After a lot of thinking past the obvious that it’s just fun to shop online or in stores, something else came to mind. When you think about the fashion industry that includes clothes, models, acsessories and of course jewelry, what else do you think about? Think for a moment about all the excitement and work that is put into items and people looking beautiful by designers and stylists all over the world. The energy alone that is this world exudes is enough to get anyone excited.
If you have ever been to a fashion photo shoot that includes models, photographers, makeup, hair and stylists you will realize how it all begins. Look at the magazines on all the racks in the food stores. It’s almost ironic, because here we are reading these magazines leaning on our wagons full of food like potato chips. In the meantime, so many people aspire to be like the people in the magazine that probably are on such strict diets just to give us something unique to look at. Of course most of this is not a realistic look in the real world or way to live, but they do entertain most of us for sure. Anyway, it’s always fun to wear pieces of beautiful gold jewelry such as sideways crosses, infinity necklaces along with beautiful clothes and accessories.
It seems pretty obvious, but makes you think how it started and why people feel the ways they do about gold jewelry overall. It has always been seen in modern culture as a status symbol, but so many people wear it just because of the beautiful designs. Imagine a couple going out to dinner and the man giving the woman a loaf of bread instead of something like gold earrings or a silver chain for a present. It might go over well in some places, but most of the time we feel that the jewelry would have a better response. A man might be happy getting something like a new power tool or ladder, but he would probably enjoy a watch much more in most cases.
Gold Diamond Cut Earrings
It has been countless years since the idea of giving jewelry started. Maybe in caveman times, the men could come home with dinosaur bones and the women would be happy. We are pretty sure even back then if he brought home a necklace made of just rocks she would have a smile on her face. Actually, even now everyone is happy to have a spontaneous gift brought home to them, so maybe that wasn’t the best example. We are sure you get the idea of what we are saying about jewelry being fun to wear though. Overall it really is the thought that counts, so any type of gold jewelry such as necklaces, chains, bracelets, earrings or anything you bring home should be greatly appreciated.
We started thinking about why people started wearing gold chains for women and men and found some interesting information about it. You know how cavemen used to wear things like animal teeth, stones or shells around their neck in the movies…Well, that’s actually how it all began! They would find these cool items and save them, so when in the caves they had something to do to pass the time. That last part was a guess, but makes sense. Many years later older generations would start to include stones with color and include stones that had metal in them as well.
Gold Rope Chain
Eventually the Egyptians became known for using gold beads to accent these pieces to make them even more beautiful. Then even further along ancient Greeks would start to set stones of color into the gold to hold them in place. Eventually the jewelry became a status symbol among the wealthy. Now 14kt gold and silver chains have evolved into so many beautiful styles, because of the diverse selection. Jewelry Megastore is proud to continue the tradition of offering gold chains for men and women in styles such as Box, Rope, Pendant, Figaro, Curb and so many more.
If you have ever wondered the meaning behind the hot new trend of Evil Eye necklaces and bracelets, now we have the answer. The term evil eye is a look that is given and believed by many cultures to cause injury or bad luck to the person it’s directed to. Many cultures believe that you don’t even know it’s happening so it’s important to wear a symbol such as another evil eye to ward the look off. Some cultures even feel that wearing an evil eye not only keep the bad wishes away, but puts them back on the people doing them.
Celebrities Wearing Evil Eye Jewelry
Over the years this has just turned into a cool piece of jewelry and it makes people take notice. It’s incredible how products like this evolve into great gifts. One of the ways that these became so popular is that so many Hollywood celebrities have made this a staple in their collection. The gold versions of these usually have an enamel center to show the colors of the eye. It really doesn’t matter if you wear this as a necklace or bracelet, because overall they are beautiful pieces. We are sure that gold Evil Eye bracelets and necklaces are a trend that will last for many years to come.
We got curious on how the origin of wearing gold bracelets came up so we did some research. It’s a lot more interesting than we even realized and glad we found out so much about this! It all started with materials such as stones and wood way back in Egyptian history dating as far back as 5000 BC. We noticed in the research that the Scarab Bracelet seems to have been the most popular for sure in old times, which everyone associates with a style of Egypt. People say the the Scarab is from someone named Khepri that would help the sun go across the sky.
A tradition years later in Bulgaria started called Martenitsa and that involved putting a string of different colors to make spring come earlier. In Greece the same was done as well and some countries the type of bracelet or bangle a women wears can even show her marital status. Whatever the reason we are so happy that everyone around the world loves bracelets and jewelry so much. They have evoloved over the years and now people wear gold bracelets and silver bracelets as a fashion item all over the world.
The ideas are almost endless for Mother’s Day gifts, but gold or diamond jewelry would be our first choice of course. The traditional gifts have always been the best choices such as flowers, jewelry, candy, cards and a special breakfast lunch or dinner. Some of the best gifts that mother’s adore receive are things made at home by children. Usually an arts and crafts project makes everyone smile and a homemade card is really special.
The typs of jewelry vary that people like to buy from us and sometimes we are even surprised at the type of things people order for various holidays. Of course the items like heart pendants, diamond studs, sideways crosses and Shamballa style bracelets always sell a lot. We are always amazed at how many people buy Disney jewelry for specific holidays. We always thought Mickey Mouse was the most popular, but we seem to sell a lot of Winnie The Pooh and Donald Duck jewelry as well. All the princesses such as Ariel and Jasmine consistently do we of course.

The precious metal Gold is used in a variety of jewelry to make items such as Gold chains, bracelets, earrings, pendants and many others and has a long history of uses. The metal is extremely malleable while being durable and resistant. When crafted by jewelers into beautiful 14k white or yellow gold jewelry designs the possibilities for artistic creation are endless.
Pure 24k gold is often mixed with other metals in order to give it even more strength. Remember, 24 karat gold is 100% pure gold and is more difficult to keep its form when not mixed with other metals. Some of the metals utilized in jewelry manufacturing are copper, silver, nickel and zinc. The color changes slightly depending on the final purity our jewelers create the jewelry with for the final products. That is why you will see that 24 karat gold is much more of a deep 14 karat yellow gold jewelry. Many people like the look of a darker yellow so they prefer 18 karat gold when buying jewelry. The metals purity chart on this page will give you a better understanding of the exact standards for the industry.
Piercing ears is one of the oldest forms of body modification that are referenced as art and dating back to 1500BC. Gold earrings became a fashion statement as far back as the 1590’s during the English renaissance. Back in 1577 it was written that men looking for women would wear earrings of gold with stones or pearls. Even sailors would wear earrings as a symbol that they sailed around the world or had even went by the equator. You can even see pictures of William Shakespeare wearing earrings in portraits of him and many others.
14kt Diamond Cut Hoop Earrings
It was not until the late 1950’s into the 1960’s that piercings really started to take off and it became more mainstream for women to aspire to have earrings. The idea of precious metal earrings is a very big industry and most are either 14k gold earrings or Sterling Silver earrings made for women, but very popular for men as well. A few different types are hoops, diamond or gold studs, huggy and dangle earrings in addition to many more. This has become an important staple of the jewelry industry and jewelry in general as part of a collection for women around the world.
