How The Idea Of Giving Jewelry For Mother’s Day Began

The history or Mother’s Day is dated way back to the ancient Greek and Roman times. Many say that the true start of a holiday was with a celebration called Mothering Sunday in the UK. In the United States Mother’s Day really started to snowball when Julia Ward suggested it be a day of peace in 1872. Since then it has become very commercialized into a holiday celebrated in 46 countries around the world with flowers and jewelry for gifts.

It’s a day that has been created to make your mother feel special by reminding her you love and appreciate her. Many people give gifts including flowers and gold, silver or diamond jewelry for Mother’s Day. Gold hear pendants are a great way to symbolize love as well. Although we all know that just saying hello and telling her how much you appreciate her is probably all she wants, but nice jewelry will give her an extra smile for sure.

Different Types Of Diamond Jewelry Setting Methods

This is a good quick overview of the different types of settings that are available for all types of jewelry. Customer ask questions like this about all our jewelry such as diamond hearts for Valentines Day regarding how they are made.

Bezel Settings

One of the first type settings invented was bezel setting. A bezel is a strip of metal made into the shape and size of the stone and placed into the piece of diamond jewelry. The stones are inserted into the bezel and metal  is over the stone to hold it in. This can work well for either faceted or cabochon stones.

Prong setting

Prong settings are the most common type, because it uses the least amount of metal to hold the stones in place showing most of the diamonds or other gemstones. These are normally wires called prongs with a different sizes and a seat is created in order to hold the stones in place.

Channel setting

Channel setting is a when the diamonds and gemstones in the gold and diamond jewelry is places between 2 bars of metal to hold them in the channel. The right way to channel set a stone is to notch the shape into the metal to properly hold it in place.

Bead setting

Bead setting is when the stones or diamonds in jewelry is placed into the metal and then tiny little beads are created around the stones to hold it in place. This is also called Pave settings when they are done very closely together with very small stones in gold and diamond jewelry.

Burnish setting

Burnish setting is when the diamonds and stones are pushed into the metal and you will not really see anything holding the stone. It’s a very clean and beautiful way to set diamonds in jewelry and has a very unique look.

The 4 C’s of Diamonds

The subject of Diamonds is very broad, a diamond’s cost is based on the characteristics known as the “4 C’s” (carat, color, clarity and cut). These are the industry standards utilized by many jewelers around the world. While clarity is frequently assumed to be the most important factor of all the “C’s”, in fact, color and cut (especially cut) have a more profound affect on the visual appearance of a diamond.

Carat:  Translates into the actual size of a diamond. Just like how a dollar is made up of 100 pennies, a one carat diamond contains 100 points, ¾ carat contains 75 points, etc.

The word “carat” comes from the seed of the carob tree pod which is found in tropical climates. These seeds were used until this century to weigh precious gems.

Color: The color of diamonds can range a great deal, the most common range is known as white to a yellow color. Increasing degrees of body color are measured on a scale ranging from no color at all (D) to deeply colored (Z).  The most common range is between D-J.

Clarity: The clarity grade of a diamond refers to the amount of inclusions in a diamond, which are the natural flaws that are in a diamond. Clarity is measured on a scale ranging from pure (flawless) to heavily included (I-3). The final clarity grade is usually determined by how easy the inclusions and blemishes are for the grader to see.

Cut:   Most people refer to this as the shape, but it also explains the proportions of a diamond. Sometimes the forgotten “C”, ensures that a given stone has maximum brilliance and sparkle which would not be the case if the stone was cut for weight alone.
